The crew were rescued by locals. Air.Gnr. Sgt.Erich Thomas Dods Machell died of his wounds the next day.
Laschelles,Brodie and Hepburn became POW

Det var 12 Hudsons som tok av fra Sumburgh mot Trondheim. Over byen ble de møtt av kraftig flak, samt 4 Bf.109E fra 11./JG.77 og en Bf.110 (M8+NH) fra 3./ZG.76. Disse tok av fra Værnes.
De engelske flyene under ledelse av Wing Commander Pearce, slapp 36 stk. 250 kilos bomber fra stor høyde over havna i Trondheim. Der lå slagkrysserne Scharnhorst og Gneisenau, samt krysseren Hipper, 3 jagere og et par forsyningsskip. To av skipene ble truffet, men skadene var små.
UA-P gikk i spiral fra stor høyde, rett i sjøen utenfor Pienes mølle i Buvika. Tre mann hoppet ut i fallskjem, mens piloten ble med flyet ned. Sherwood og Napier landet i Buvika.
John Craig, som det ble hevdet ble skutt i luften, gikk i sjøen og sank.
Napier landet i Øyåsmarka ved Perstu, men ble tatt av tyskerne ved Blekesmark.
Alex Sherwood som landet ved Raudmyra på Kvernberget i Buvika, kom seg via Hølonda-Kvål-Singsås og Selbu etterhvert til Sverige, med god hjelp av mange nordmenn. Han brukte 9 dager på den turen.

12 Hudsons took off from Sumburgh, Shetland at 1130 on operation to Trondheim. UA-P was probably shot down by flak over Trondheim, and spiralled down into the Gaulosen fjord outside the mill in Buvika. Sgt.John Craig(20) was shot dead by one of the five attacking Messerschmitts from Værnes, while hanging in his parachute. Sgt.George William Robson went down in the sea with the plane, the rest of the crew managed to bail out. Leading Aircraftman A. Napier became POW. Navigator Sgt. Alex Sherwood managed to escape to Sweden with help from Norwegians. Their mission was to attack the "Scharnhorst" "Gneisenau" and "Admiral Hipper" in Trondheim harbour.
RAF lost 2 Hudsons in this air battle above Gaulosen fjord. UA-G made a forced landing on the fjord, 400m outside Steinshylla. All four on board managed to jump into the dinghy before the aircraft sank. Sgt. Erich T D Machell was badly wounded and died at the Red Cross Hospital in Trondheim the next day. The others: Sgt.E B Laschelles, Sgt A M S Brodie and Sgt J G Hepburn, became POW. Sgt Machell rests in Stavne Cemetery
